Ha! People know I'm nuts here at home, too! Not sure I'm qualified to give "funny lessons" though. I'm guessing most people laugh because it's always funnier when the hilarity (or the horribleness involving a fetid skunk) happens to someone else. It's the classic "better you than me" mantra, methinks. ;-D

Okay, not fair. I'm sitting here at the Writing Center, working, laughing my butt off. Remind me not to read your work outside of my home. There people know I'm nuts; here I'm trying to put on a certain respectable showing.

Seriously, I want to be funny, too. Do you give lessons? Thanks for the ways you brighten my life.

Mindy,
Your column is a joy to read. I am sending it on to my daughters who have or will be dealing with many of the issues you bring up. Keep writing- it's wonderful!

A couple of weeks ago I discovered your writing on Planet Mom and told my husband,"I have found a treasure chest." Nearly every day since I have been reading, sometimes enjoying a laugh or sometimes crying.
Like the aforementioned Captain Clutter, I too mourn items from the past that were snippets of my life and have gone into the landfill because others did not believe they meant anything: Cherry & White magazines from high school that included my heartfelt poems--so far the only place that I have been published, a cheap plastic wallet that belonged to my grandmother who passed away when she was only 63 and I was only 11-- the woman who raised me for years 3-10 and also wrote poetry and had a love of cooking, and other bizarre but meaningful, to me at least, bits of detritus from childhood and teenage times. While I do admit to hoarding just plain crap, mainly because I have too little time to sort through it all, there is much that is squirreled away because it just plain means something for some inexplicable reason. It does not matter if no one else understands it, or me; it's mine, and it is important.

As I read this, while blinking the tears away, I too thought of times and people who have passed. I think of my mother who still saves cards that those closest to her have sent, or handed since I am notoriously cheap, and her statement of "I don't need a gift, as long as they send a card." Cards do matter, and so does the thought behind them. It might be a "girl" thing more than a guy since I know how much thought my daughter invests in her card selections and the messages she write in them, and how she too reads and savours the cards she receives-as opposed to her brothers who see the money, grab it, and move on most of the time. Guess that's my two cents for now since I still am having trouble seeing through the tears. So, please excuse any errors, and know I love you and your writing.

ok- I recieved one BD from the humane society as my good friend works there and she knew I could not resist. My kindergarteners and my 2 young girls loved her. For some goofy reason we decided Wizard (she) needed a buddy so we adopted another female looking for a new home. Now we had "Thelma and Louise". A few months later- suddenly our "females" laid eggs! Thankfully there was no decision/s to be made as they were infertile (they had yet to truly figure out what they were doing)...and after looking for a vet who really knew how to sex them- turns out Louise is a Lois. Lois has found a new family that makes our house look like his tenament home before the good life- and he has a new name to match as Luigi. We have since found a REAL female who needed a new home and the grils seem to get along with fewer surprises...
